pruning a weeping cherry tree - Knowledgebase Question

I have a weeping cherry tree. It has a large stalk standing straight up the middle. I feel i should prune it. However i dont know when or how. Please Help!!!!!

The water sprout or sucker can be pruned off at any time. Cut it flush with the branch where it is emerging. Cherry trees often develop water sprouts - just prune them off to keep your tree's integrity and weeping form.
