The Q&A Archives: Mulch areas

Question: I want to put mulch in certain areas of my yard that has grass on it. Do I have to kill the grass? If So, how do I kill the grass? or can I just put the mulch over top of the grass?

Answer: If the mulch is thick enough, it will keep sunlight from penetrating and may kill the grass beneath - however if it is not thick enough the grass will grow right through it. You may opt to remove the grass or to kill it with a vegetation killer such as Round Up prior to mulching the area. Round Up will kill any plant it touches so keep it away from plants you want to keep.
