The Q&A Archives: bougainvillea

Question: my bougainvillea does not bloom or if it does it drops it blooms quickly. there does not appear to be any insect problem and it gets plenty of water.I have fertilized with bloom special and this spring there was some blooms but then they fell off. any suggestions?

Answer: Bougainvilleas bloom on new wood, on a 4 week cycle. The best practice is to prune immediately after flowering to encourage the development of new flowering wood. I suggest pruning it back now, and expect it to flower in about four weeks. These plants flower best under stress so try keeping the plant slightly on the dry side. It also likes heat and tolerates reflected heat well. Hope this information helps!
