The Q&A Archives: Pruning Clematis

Question: Should you cut down your clematis in the fall or save the branches for new growth in the spring.

Answer: Clematis blooms on new wood which is produced on old wood so you can prune yours down in the spring, just before new growth begins. Don't prune back too far - you'll need some old wood on which new flowering shoots can develop. Enjoy your garden!
