I recently asked a question on prunning my clematis but still not sure I understand correctly. I trimmed off some old shoots and do have new growth on some of the wood now. I want to know if in the fall and before winter, do you cut the plant down to the base or leave it alone until the following spring. The new growth this spring seems to be coming from the old wood. Thank you

New growth does come from old wood so you won't want to prune everything down to soil level but you can certainly remove some of the stems back that far and then shorten others so you always have old wood. Hope this clarifies things!
