Answer: Gophers and moles usually leave mounds of soil near their holes so if you are seeing bare holes with no mounds of soil, you are probably dealing with voles rather than moles. Voles (often called field mice) do raid gardens during the winter months in search of something to eat. Fill in the holes. If they resurface you may want to set some traps.
