I planted a japanese maple laceleaf tree in Chicago (Zone 5) only to realize afterward it is only rated for zone 6. What can I do to protect it in winter? |
With any luck it is in a protected part of your garden and because it is deciduous you can probably just cover it with pine boughs. As it grows you may need to fashion a cage out of chicken wire or hardware cloth and fill it with dried leaves or straw to provide a little protection. There's really no guarantee if it is planted in the ground. If it were in a container you would only need to move it to a site out of winter winds and ice storms. Hope you can keep your Japanese maple alive! |
