How do you keep the soil from compacting when you water plant in a pot?

If you are using potting soil, it may look compacted but it has lots of air spaces because of the perlite it contains. If you are using regular garden soil, it is almost impossible to keep it from compacting unless you mix in copious amounts of organic matter. Your soil is mostly clay and clay has such tiny particles that it packs together very tightly. The only way to control that is to incorporate lots of organic matter. You may want to repot your plant in potting soil or at least well amended garden soil.
