Hello. We live in a townhouse for our front yard is quite small. We have a small sidewalk that is surrounded by 5 shrubs, 5 inch space between. I would like to add some plants/flowers that will blend with the shrubs and will also come back each year while hopefully expanding. We also would like to add edging and new mulch. We have khaki siding with burgundy shutters. I am a beginner. Help.

It doesn't sound as though you have a lot of room and most perennial plants can get fairly large so I wonder if you would be better off with annuals this year as you search for just the right perennials for your garden? Things like alyssum, petunias, and creeping zinnia can help fill in around the shrubs and edge them nicely to bring color to the area. Or, low growing perennials such as wooly thyme, creeping dianthus, Basket of Gold or creeping phlox might be an option. A five inch space really isn't enough growing room for larger perennials. Wish I had more ideas!
