how can I prune my wild, wild forsythia, without having it look too moundy?

I think selective pruning is the answer. Instead of pruning it by a little bit all over, remove some of the extra tall stems by pruning them down to the middle of the shrub or lower. They will resprout and make the inner part of the shrub thicker and more dense. You can always cut off more but it is hard to replace a pruning mistake so follow each stem down to where it originates and cut at random heights. You will reduce the size without ending up with a roundy-moundy.
