The Q&A Archives: Hostas Losing Color

Question: My variagated old hostas are beautiful! I divided them and replanted. The new hostas are healthy but are turning all green. Can I add something to the soil to make them variagated again??

Answer: Very interesting! Hostas react to the amount of light they receive. Sometimes they come up green and as the summer progresses and the light intensity increases, they develop variegated leaves. You might want to experiment with locations and see what happens, or you might want to just leave them where they are and see if they develop variegated leaves. It's an interesting topic!
