I have used red plastic coffee cans around my tomatos for a couple of years after hearing that they somehow help the plants. I have had a bumper crop since using them Why is that?

There's a scientific answer for that. Red mulch (or in this case coffee containers) reflect just the right UV light spectrum for good plant growth in tomato plants. Some gardeners crumple up red cellophane wrapping paper to put beneath their plants and get the same good results.
