My Euony. were badly hit by scale. Much die-back. I want to prune to restore. How much and when?

You can safely take the plant back by about one third without harming it. If you need to prune more, plan on doing it over a period of 2-3 years. Pruning in October or November ensures new growth will appear at a time where cold weather prevents mildew and scale from taking hold. If hard pruned in summer the new growth produced in the warmer months will be more susceptible to both mildew and scale. Best wishes with your euonymous!
