Verbena has airy, branching stems with finely divided leaves. The stems carry spikes of flowers (pink, lavender, purple, rose or red) and they bloom all summer. The most commonly planted verbena will grow from 8 to 15 inches tall. One variety will grow to 6 feet tall, and another has a spreading habit and is used as a groundcover.
