| I would like to take out dying azalea bushes that have not recovered since Katrina. I would like to plant a fern tree and boxwood bushes. So many homes in Baton Rouge, LA have monkey grass around their trees and in front of bushes. Can you recommend some hardy bushes and trees that are appropriate in the scorching heat of Lousiana? |
| Some good choices for shrubs includ Burning Bush 'Dwarf' (Euonymus alatus 'Compacta'), grows 5-6' H x 5' W in full sun or partial shade; has fire red fall foliage. Cryptomeria "Dwarf Global' (Cryptomeria japonica 'Globosa Nana'), 5' H x 5' W in full sun or part shade. Dwarf Yaupon 'Bordeaux' holly (Ilex vomitoria), 4' H x 5' W in full sun. Foliage is gray-green with wine-red new growth. Indian Hawthorne 'Eleanor Tabor' (Raphiolepis), grows 3-4' H x 5-6' W in full sun or part shade. Has pink flowers in spring and again in the fall. Quince (Chaenomeles), grows 3' H x 5' W in full sun or partial shade. Blooms in red, white or salmon colored flowers in the spring. Tea Olive (Oamanthus fragrans), 8'+ H x 5'+ W, full sun or part shade. Highly fragrant white flowers through out the spring and fall. Trees might include crape myrtle, fig, citrus, blueberry, pawpaw, pomegranate and persimmon. Or, Southern Sugar Maple, Big Leaf Magnolia, Sawtooth Oak, Chinese Pistache (pistachio), Blue Beech, Sweetbay, Sassafras, Winged Elm, Cedar Elm, Black Gum, Tuliptree, Baldcypress, Sycamore, Longleaf Pine, Cow Oak, Burr Oak, Black walnut, American Elm, or Cottonwood.
