I live in Colorado at 9000 ft. The area behind my house is natually flat and has sparse grass growing with a few bare spots. It's also rocky underneath in many places and I'd imagine the dirt is very shallow. Would ordinary lawn seed work or something like

I don't think you will be happy with turfgrasses at your altitude. They won't perform well and will need to be reseeded every year. Instead, how about planting a groundcover? Ajuga reptans (Carpet bugle) is hardy in your elevation, Arenaria montana (Mountain sandwort) is another colorful, creeping groundcover, and Leontopodium alpinum (Edelweiss) are all recommended for your growing region.
