It's my understanding that one should spray a crab apple tree in the spring to eliminate fungus that curls and turns some of my leaves brown. What would I use?

Use a fungicide such as lime/sulfur (bordeaux). You will find several brands in the fruit tree spray section of your garden center. Follow label directions - you will need to make repeat applications from bud swell through petal fall to protect your tree.
