I have a dog who has run a rut in my grass. I am looking to fill it with black dirt and some kind of attractive and maneagable ground cover. What should I use?

Any groundcover you plant will eventually creep into the adjoining lawn unless you place a barrier between the two areas. Ajuga (carpet bugle) is a low growing ground cover. Pachysandra, Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense), Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens), or Vinca Minor. Enjoy your garden!
