Your first line of defense should be choosing the most disease resistant tomato varieties you can find (look for a string of letters on the plant tag or the back of the seed package to indicate the diseases they are most resistant to). Then plant them in soil amended with organic matter and give each plant ample space to grow and still have good air circulation all around. Keep water off the leaves as much as possible, water your plants deeply as required and as often as required to promote healthy growth and feed your plants with a side dressing of compost or aged manure. When give optimal growing conditions and care, your plants should remain as pest free as tomatoes can be. Monitor your plants at least daily, handpicking any insects you see and snipping off any leaves you suspect might be diseased.
