Hi! We own a newly built home on 2 acres. There are not many trees. We'd like to plant some shrubs around a patio area which will give us some privacy. Could you suggest some shrubs that would appear quite dense, grow quickly, thrive in full sun, grow to at least 8 feet tall, and are deciduous? We are looking for something simple and green - preferably without a lot of colour or flowers. We want it to be a neutral backdrop and we will plant other flowering, showy shrubs nearby.

Also - we would like to leave 1 acre

I think a wildflower meadow is a perfect solution to a low maintenance, high interest landscape. There are not too many deciduous shrubs that do not flower, nor are there many deciduous conifers that will fit your criteria. But, below is a list of hardy shrubs that you can use as a privacy screen in your cold winter climate. Perhaps these will appeal to you:
Cotoneaster adpressus var. praecox, Potentilla fruticosa, Spiraea bumalda ?Anthony Waterer?, Symphoricarpos chenaultii ?Hancock?, Viburnum opulus ?Nanum?,
Chaenomeles speciosa, Euonymus alata, Philadelphus coronarius ?Aureus?, Rosa rugosa,
Spiraea x vanhouttei, Juniperus chinensis ?Pfitzeriana?, Juniperus sabina,
Picea glauca ?Conica?, Pinus mugo var. mugo Taxus media ?Brownii?, Taxus cuspidata (spreading types), Thuja occidentalis ?Woodwardii?.

Good luck with your new landscape.
