| I have many different lilies, both daylilies and Asian. I would like to know what care is needed after the bloom as turned to seed pod, Do I remove the dead flower, cut the seed pod and when do I trim the greenery? There are many books on how to plant and fertilize and where to plant, and what kind of soil, but few have the actural care of the plant after the flower blooms. I am always afraid that I will damage the plant for the next season if I cut it down to soon. |
| Even though there are many species of lilies, the general care and growing requirements for them remains the same. Lilies need deep, loose, well-drained soil, ample moisture year round, and sun or filtered shade at the tops where the flowers form. Remove faded flowers but wait until stems and leaves turn yellow before you cut them back. Removing the faded flowers will keep seed pods from forming, which will keep the plant from directing its energy into producing seeds. This will result in more vigorous plants. Cut the seed pods off now, but leave the stems and foliage to wither down naturally. |
