My son is a hot pepper fan (he thinks). He came home with something called Hungarian peppers. What are these, are they hot, give us a scale rating and some advice on heating them up. |
Most likely you have Hungarian Wax peppers, some folks call them Banana Peppers. These are the peppers you usually get on a pizza. On the Scoville Heat Unit scale, they are rated 2,500 to 4000. For comparison, a habanero is rated 150,000-300,000 and a green bell pepper is rated 0. The hotter the air temperature where the peppers are grown, the hotter the peppers will be. Another factor that can influence heat is the timing of nitrogen fertilizer application. Avoid applying nitrogen after the fruit has set because the fertilizer can reduce the heat of the peppers. |
