Digging is usually the first option, although unless you remove the entire taproot, dandelions will simply grow back. Under the circumstances, you may want to use a broadleaf weed killer (such as 2,4-D). The best time to control dandelions is right now, when daytime temperatures reach 75F or higher. Best wishes with your new home!
