The Q&A Archives: Leyland Cypress pruning

Question: Should I prune my new leyland Cypress trees which are 3mos old? I want them to grow wide & fast.

Answer: Leyland cypress can grow 3-4 feet a year once the roots are established. Because yours are young and newly planted, I'd suggest allow them to spend this spring and summer establishing their root systems so they can support new growth. Next spring you can prune them if you'd like.
