Mulch of all kinds can become moldy and it is simply part of the decomposition or decaying process. You can avoid this by periodically raking through the mulch to incorporate fresh air. The mold will disappear if you spread the pinestraw out in the sunshine for a day or two. It won't hurt your plants or your turfgrass to use pinestraw as a mulch.
