The Q&A Archives: mold

Question: i removed all the pinestraw from around my flower bed and there was mold under it. should i treat the ground for mold before i put down more cover? also will it hurt my grass if i mulch the pine straw on to my grass?

Answer: Mulch of all kinds can become moldy and it is simply part of the decomposition or decaying process. You can avoid this by periodically raking through the mulch to incorporate fresh air. The mold will disappear if you spread the pinestraw out in the sunshine for a day or two. It won't hurt your plants or your turfgrass to use pinestraw as a mulch.
