The Q&A Archives: Scott's Potting Soil Too Old?

Question: I bought some Scott's potting soil a couple months ago at Home Depot and it has a strong odor and some

Answer: Your potting soil is just fine to use. The sow bugs are attracted to the decaying organic matter and will live there quite happily. If they bother you you can either trap them or just spread the potting soil out in the sunshine. They will leave if the potting soil gets too hot. Or, you can trap them by rolling up a sheet of newspaper, dampening it and setting it on top of the soil. They will crawl in to hide and you can fold up the ends and toss the paper in your compost pile or garbage can each morning. Repeat as often as necessary.
