There are two ways to help keep your soil moist. First, amend the planting bed with organic matter prior to planting. Use compost, shredded leaves, aged manure or whatever organic matter is locally available. Organic matter will help the soil hold moisture. Then, after you have finished planting, spread another 2-3 inches of organic matter over the bare soil. This mulch will help slow evaporation and will also suppress weeds. Best wishes with your garden.
