| Some types of magnoila take years to mature enough to bloom; other magnolias will bloom at a young age and are considered to be free flowering. If yoursw seems otherwise healthy then a common reason for non-blooming is pruning at the wrong time of year; any pruning or shaping would be done in early summer after the bloom period to avoid removing flower buds. Also, it is possible that oscillating temperatures and late frosts in the spring will destroy the flower buds prior to their opening. Strong cold winter winds could also damage flower buds. Finally, in order to set flowers the tree does need to be growing vigorously. It does best in a rich, evenly moist yet well drained soil in a location out of wind both winter and summer.
