| Over the past two days my hostas have developed these symptoms: first there were transparant areas on the leaves (not holes), then brown leaf edges and wilting, and finally blackish spots on the leaves that look like mold. No such problems last year in this spot. It's been quite wet and humid for the past two weeks. Help! |
| You have most likely diagnosed your problem. The humidity and moisture are perfect breeding grounds for a plethora of fungi. Some of the damage you describe (transparent areas) do sound like some common garden pests that really aren't much to be concerned about. I would try pruning out the discolored/moldy leaves and discarding them. It is possible that when the weather gets more consistently warm and less moist, the hosta will correct itself. If you want to be on the safe side, you can spray with a copper-based fungicide, such as Soap Sheild from Gardens Alive (5100 Schenely Pl., Lawrenceburg IN 47025; ph# 812/537-8650). Try just a little at first to make sure it doesn't burn the leaves - after testing, follow label instructions for application. Good luck! |
