apple tree - Knowledgebase Question

i have a two year old apple tree. the bark is missing in a spot about 4inches around. i have wire mesh around the bottom of the trunk, so it is not animals. it is up higher where the branches fork off. any idea what it is and what can i do?

I can't tell without looking at it. Could be damage from birds, or it could be insect damage or even a disease. There's not much you can do unless you see insect activity or fungus growing or even birds or other wildlife peeling the bark off the trunk. Squirrels sometimes peel the bark, as do birds looking for insects. Wish I had more to offer!
