The Q&A Archives: Pruning a young red maple

Question: I purchased a red maple last week and recent planted it. It is approx 8 feet tall with a 3/4

Answer: If you cut the top, you might damage the central leader which could result in flat growth, which would be abnormal for a maple. These trees often look gangly in youth but fill out nicely as they mature. I'd just leave it alone and let it fill out on its own.
