I have rented a 20' x 20' garden spot in our community and would like some help with what to plant and how close etc.
I am thinking beans, watermelons, peppers, cucumbers...I am about 10 minutes away and will ot be able to wwatch for animals etc eating. Any suggestions of what to plant?
It is mostly for fun and to do with my grandkids.
Thanks!

What a fun project for you and your grandkids! The general rule of thumb is tall crops go in the back (north), while short crops go in the front (south) of your garden. This way no plant shades another. I place rows of pole beans and tomatoes in the back. The next row would be peppers. On the edges of the beds I'd plant melons and cucumber and let them vine outside the garden, thus saving space. In front I'd plant carrots, radishes and bush beans. They should all fit. Just follow the spacing recommendations on the packages and you'll end up having more food than you can eat!!! Enjoy your garden.
