The Q&A Archives: Bleeding plant

Question: My rubber plant had some brown spots on it and I trimmed them away but it's snoozing out a milky liquid, where I trimmed it. Have I hurt the plant?

Answer: Ficus, or rubber plant, has a latex like fluid in the stems and branches. If you prune while it is actively growing, it will ooz the sap. Eventually the plant will close up the injury and no more sap will escape. Next time you prune, remember to do it when the weather is cool and the plant is not actively growing. Good luck with your rubber plant!
