I am growing 4 different types of tomatoes in 10 gallon pots. I used commercial potting soil mix and have fertilized them with a water soluble product containing all necessary trace elements. The tomatoes have ripend but are either very sour or very acid. I noticed my fertilizer did not contain calcium. So I added some lime when I fertilized one time early in the season. |
Tomato flavor can vary somewhat between varieties and growing seasons. Also, some varieties of tomatoes taste more acidic than others. However, the biggest determinants of flavor are healthy plants with plenty of sunlight and water. Green, healthy leaves convert sunlight to sugar in the presence of adequate moisture and fertility. It sounds like your choice of containers, growing media, and fertilization are all good. Could sunlight be lacking? Tomatoes taste their best when allowed to fully ripen. Make sere you are not getting too anxious and tasting them before their time! |
