Japanese red maples will remain red without special fertilizers. The color can bleach in the sun and some maple leaves start out green and then turn red, but overall they should remain red during the summer season. Maples can be fed with an 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 fertilizer each spring. Best wishes with your trees.
