The Q&A Archives: Growing Chestnuts in ME

Question: Has anyone in Maine had success growing sweetheart chestnuts? We would love to grow them but are unsure if they would make it in our climate (zone 4). Christa Boucher Maine

Answer: 'Sweet-Hart' chestnut is listed as hardy in zone 4, according to Mellinger's catalog (2310 W. South Range Rd., North Lima, OH 44452-9731, ph# 800/321-7444). They are BIG trees when full grown - up to 40' tall and 40' wide, and you'll need two of them for best pollination and yields. Soil should be deep (for those huge roots to be able to spread) and pH should be slightly acidic (5-6.5). Enjoy!
