I would like to know if anything can be done about all the weeds in our yard. There are so many different types, and they are so dense, that all I do,is mow weeds. Will I have to till it up and start from scratch?

If you have more weeds than grass, it might be better to till it up and start all over again. While there are many different types of weed killers available, not all can be used on all types of turf. If you have bermuda or St. Augustine, the best controls are pre emergence products applied in very early spring before weed seeds have a chance to sprout. Without knowing the type of turf you are growing or the extent of the weed invasion, it's difficult to advise you. I think I would vote for starting over with a clean slate. Fall is an excellent time to establish a new lawn and we can provide suggestions for how to best prepare the area. Good luck with your lawn.
