| 1) we would like to plant a crepe myrdl (sp?) in our yard (hot pink). We live in Dallas, TX. Since it is May is it ok for us to plant now? (same thing for bushes and other trees). 2) need suggestions for seasonal color that does not attract bees for our back yard (children play outside alot near the beds so need color w/o the bees :) thank you |
| Crape myrtles grow well in your region so I think that's a good choice. It is a little too hot to be planting landscape trees and shrubs now, though. Fall would be better, but if you have the tree already, it would be best to get it into the ground as soon as possible so the roots can stretch out into the cooler soil rather than be cooped up in a hot nursery pot. After planting, water deeply once each week to help the roots become established. Expect some wilting and even some leaf loss as the tree adjusts to its new home. You won't need to do anything except keep your new tree watered during the summer months. Once or twice a week, deeply soaking the soil, will help it along. Some flowers that don't attract bees include cultivars of dianthus, geraniums, chrysanthemums, marigolds, strawflowers, some zinnias and many roses. There are others so you might visit gardens and garden centers to note which blooms you like that seem to not be visited by bees. Best wishes with your landscape! |
