Eventually the organic matter will begin to decompose and turn your soil into rich garden loam. In the meantime, additional nitrogen will help replace the depleted nitrogen. I'd add some blood meal (high in nitrogen) to the garden and spread some compost over the bare soil between the plants. At the end of the season you can dig the compost into the soil to enrich it even more. Best wishes with your garden!
