| Tomatoes will adapt quite nicely to growing in containers. Begin with a fairly large sized pot (2-gallon or larger) for each plant, and expect to provide some support like a couple of stakes, a small trellis, or a wire tomato cage placed securely in the pot. Use good potting soil rather than garden soil. Potting soil will drain better than garden soil and won't become compacted when it dries out. Choose a determinate type tomato like Burpee's 'Sweet Tangerine' or 'Northern Exposure' rather than a sprawling indeterminate-type. Since your tomato plant will have a restricted root system inside the container, plan on watering and feeding more often than if the plant were out in the garden. You can grow small cherry-type tomatoes in smaller pots if you don't have the room for a full-sized tomato plant. |
