Unless you're digging and dividing irises, the leaves should be allowed to wither and die on their own. Once they've died down, pull them from the rhizomes and remove them from the garden. If you're going to lift and divide the iris, wait until late summer (around August). Cut the leaves and the roots to about six inches, replant the rhizomes just below the soil level, and water them well to remove any air pockets under the rhizomes. |
