Nearly any organic matter, including grass clippings, straw, newspapers, cardboard, compost, etc. will help suppress weeds in your garden. The mulch needs to be thick enough to prevent sunlight from penetrating the soil. This will keep weed seeds from germinating and weeds from sprouting up around your veggies. Or, you can cover the entire bed with a weed barrier landscape fabric, anchor it down and cut holes in the fabric to plant your plants. Best wishes with your garden!
