I was told that the numbers on lawn fertilizer can be easily remmebered as

You're close. Nitrogen (the first number) promotes healthy green growth. Phosphorous (the second number) strengthens stems and promotes flowering. Potassium encourages good root growth and works in conjunction with the other two elements. If you want green grass you use a fertilizer high in nitrogen and potassium (top growth and root growth) but since you don't want to promote flowering in your turf, the middle number should be low. I always use a fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio of NPK for my turf. Hope this clarifies things for
