I w/b planting some type of columnar/pyrimidal evergreen trees soon and I wanted to know what would be the best type for a southwest lawn that is well-drained in So. Iowa. They have to be an evergreen because I need a year round screen. I'm leaning toward upright Arborvitae trees. Is there anything better? I'm a beginner gardener so I need all the help I can get with selection & care. Thank_You.

Arborvitae is a good choice for your region. You might also consider Columnar Blue Spruce (Picea p. 'Glauca Fastigiata') which grows 8' tall and 3' wide and has beautiful foliage color, or Juniperus chinensis 'Iowa' (Chinese Juniper). All are evergreen and dense growing to provide the privacy screening you're looking for. Best wishes with your landscape.
