The Q&A Archives: asparagus

Question: my asparagus plants are in their second year.they grew to 6 feet tall.I trimmed them down to 4 feet .is this ok

Answer: The ferny foliage asparagus develops feeds the roots of the plants so they will grow strong enough to develop lots and lots of edible spears the following year. Cutting the foliage down means the roots won't get the benefit of all that foliage. I'd leave it alone next year and you'll have a better harvest the following year.
