| The soil may be compacted in those areas. You might want to dig out the areas, dead grass and all, then add some compost and level the spots. Overseed with fresh grass seed and the grass will sprout in a week or 10 days. The roots will be able to penetrate the soil once you've added some compost and that should take care of the problem.
