Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) is one of many date palms of the genus Phoenix. These are not dependably hardy in Houston. However, you do have quite a few Pindo Palms growing in and around the city. Pindo or Jelly Palm (Butia capitata) bears an edible fruit about 1" long and yellow to red in color. It is sometimes used in making jelly or preserves. This is likely the fruiting palm you see in your area.
