We live in middle Tennessee. When we lived in New Orleans, we always liked to use pine straw in our garden. Is this a good idea here? Does Home Depot sell pine straw?

You can use whatever is locally available. Straw is fine, pine needles, rice hulls, etc. are all good mulches. I think if you buy in bulk you can save some money so why not check with local Farmer's Market vendors or local farmers to see what they might offer. Or you can purchase packaged compost or manure from your local garden center. Best wishes with your garden.
