planted last year and were fine,doing good This spring so far nothing no leaves no buds. Are they dead?

Try scraping the bark off a couple of branches with your fingernail. If there is green tissue beneath the bark, the branch is still alive. If the tissue is brown, the branch is dead. Keep scraping along the branches until you find green tissue. If you find some, there's still hope. If you don't find any, I'm afraid the tree is dead. Let's hope for the best!
