The Q&A Archives: Kiwi Fruit

Question: You are selling Kiwi fruit vines in your dayton,Ohio store. I think I need to plant a male and female to get the fruit. I am looking for vines for my Pergola Is Kiwi vine dirty? What is the bloom like? Good choice?Remember I am looking for a vine first.

Answer: Some hardy kiwi plants are self fertile. Look for Actinidia melandra, or A. Arguta 'Issai'. These will produce fruits without a male kiwi around. The vines do not drop a lot of litter and the flowers are small so dropped petals should not cause a problem. Kiwi vines are quite fast growing and should cover your pergola in only a year or two. Enjoy!
